Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your JimdoMail mailbox. When you log in, you enter a code from an authenticator app on your phone in addition to your password. This way, nobody can access your mailbox with your password alone. Two-factor authentication is turned off by default and entirely optional.
In this article:
Before you start
You need an authenticator app on your phone. You can use any authenticator app, for example:
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Twilio Authy
You can download these apps for free from the App Store or Google Play.
Tip: Choose an authenticator app that can back up your codes to an account. If you lose or replace your phone, you can then restore your codes yourself.
Turn on two-factor authentication
- Log in to the JimdoMail webmail at inbox.jimdo.com.
- Click the gear icon in the bottom left corner to open the settings.
- Click Security, then click Set OTP. OTP stands for one-time password, the code your authenticator app creates.
- Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code shown on the screen.
- Enter the code from your authenticator app and click Confirm.
Two-factor authentication is now turned on. From now on, you'll enter a code from your authenticator app each time you log in to the webmail.
If you lose access to your authenticator app
If your phone is lost, broken or replaced, try these options first:
- Your app is linked to an account: Many authenticator apps, such as Google Authenticator, can be linked to an account. Install the same app on your new phone and sign in with the same account. Your codes come back and you can log in as usual.
- You still have another device with the app: Use the code from that device to log in. You can then set up two-factor authentication again with your new phone.
If neither works, contact our Support team from the Jimdo account that manages your domain. To protect your mailbox, we first check that you're the owner of the email account. We then turn off two-factor authentication for your mailbox, so you can log in with your password only. We recommend turning it back on with your new phone afterwards.
Turn off two-factor authentication
You can turn off two-factor authentication yourself at any time in your webmail settings under Security.
