For most customers, the JimdoMail upgrade happens completely on our side. If your domain's DNS settings are managed by another provider, though, you need to update a few settings yourself so that your emails keep arriving. This article helps you find out whether that applies to you and walks you through the steps.
In this article:
Check whether you need to do anything
Did you register your domain with Jimdo? Then you're all set. There's nothing you need to do.
Did you register your domain somewhere else? Log in to your domain provider (for example GoDaddy, IONOS or Namecheap) and open the DNS or nameserver settings for your domain.
- If the nameservers point to Jimdo, you're all set. There's nothing you need to do.
- If they are your provider's own nameservers, follow the steps in this article.
Not sure? Contact our Support team and we'll check for you.
Wait until we tell you to switch
Please don't change your DNS settings yet. Until we've copied your emails to your new mailbox, new emails need to keep arriving in your current mailbox. If you change your settings too early, you can lose emails.
We'll let you know when it's time to switch. Until then, your email keeps working as usual.
Update your MX and SPF records
Once we've told you it's time to switch, follow these steps:
- Log in to your domain provider's account and open the DNS settings for your domain.
- Delete your existing MX records.
-
Add these two new MX records:
Type Value Priority MX mx1.mail.jimdo.com 10 MX mx2.mail.jimdo.com 20 - Update your SPF record. This is a TXT record that starts with v=spf1. Replace include:emailsrvr.com with include:spf.mail.jimdo.com, so that the record reads: v=spf1 include:sendgrid.net include:spf.mail.jimdo.com ~all
- Save your changes.
It can take 24 to 48 hours until the changes take effect everywhere. If you can't find these settings, your domain provider's support team can help you.
What happens after you switch
About an hour after you've updated your MX records, we copy over all emails that arrived in your old mailbox in the meantime. You don't need to do anything for this, and no emails get lost.
