Help with setting up a CNAME forwarding

Here you’ll find help setting up a CNAME redirect with the most common domain providers. In general, you need to set up this redirect with your domain provider (not at Jimdo). So please log in to your domain provider’s control panel to make these changes. You will find instructions for the most common providers below.

1) Basic principle (applies to all providers)

In your domain’s DNS settings, create or adjust the following record:

Hostname Type Target TTL
www.yourdomain.com CNAME web.jimdo.com. Automatic (e.g., 1 hour)
Important: Use either CNAME (as above) or Jimdo nameservers—never both at the same time. Many UIs add the trailing dot automatically; check that the target shows as web.jimdo.com.
Root domain (without subdomain): Also set up a 301 redirect from yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com with your domain provider so the address without www works as well.

Note: DNS changes can propagate within minutes, but may take up to 24 hours.

2) Provider-specific guides (step by step)

IONOS
  1. Log in to your IONOS account → open Domains & SSL.
  2. Go to DNS / DNS settings for your domain.
  3. Check the existing www entry:
    • If it’s an A or other type: edit or delete.
    • New: Add record → CNAME.
  4. Hostname: www • Points to: web.jimdo.com. • Save.
  5. Optional: Set up a 301 redirect yourdomain.com → https://www.yourdomain.com.
STRATO
  1. STRATO login → Domains → DNS settings.
  2. Under DNS entries, check/remove existing records for host www.
  3. New DNS entry → CNAME:
    • Hostname: www
    • Target: web.jimdo.com.
  4. Save, then configure a 301 redirect yourdomain.com → www.yourdomain.com (menu Redirects).
united-domains
  1. Log in → Domain Center → choose domain → DNS.
  2. Select New entry → CNAME.
  3. Host: www • Target:web.jimdo.com. • Save.
  4. Under Redirects, set a 301 from yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.
netcup
  1. CCP login → open the domain’s DNS / DNS zone.
  2. Remove any www A records.
  3. Add record → CNAME: Host www, Target web.jimdo.com., TTL default.
  4. Set up a separate 301 redirect for the root domain in the hosting/redirects area.
Hetzner (DNS Console)
  1. Hetzner account → DNS Console → open the domain’s zone.
  2. Add Record → CNAME: Name www, Target web.jimdo.com. → Save.
  3. Optional: Configure a 301 redirect for the root domain on the web server/hosting.
OVH
  1. OVH Control Panel → Domains → select domain → DNS zone.
  2. Edit/create entry for www → CNAME → Target web.jimdo.com. → confirm.
  3. Set a 301 redirect yourdomain.com → www.yourdomain.com in Redirections.
Cloudflare
  1. Cloudflare → select domain → DNS tab.
  2. Add record → Type CNAME:
    • Name: www
    • Target: web.jimdo.com.
    • Proxy Status: DNS only (grey cloud) recommended during setup.
  3. Create a root redirect (Page Rule/Redirect Rule) from @ → https://www.yourdomain.com as a 301.
GoDaddy
  1. GoDaddy account → My Products → Domain → DNS.
  2. For host www, set the record to CNAME → Points to: web.jimdo.com. → save.
  3. Forwarding: Domain forwarding http(s)://yourdomain.com → https://www.yourdomain.com (301, permanent).
Namecheap
  1. Namecheap Dashboard → Domain → Advanced DNS.
  2. Add New Record → Type CNAME → Host www → Value web.jimdo.com. → save.
  3. URL Redirect Record (301) for host @ to https://www.yourdomain.com.
Squarespace Domains (formerly Google Domains)
  1. Log in → select domain → DNS.
  2. Resource records → Add record → CNAME:
    • Name: www
    • Data: web.jimdo.com.
  3. Enable a permanent redirect from yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.
ALL-INKL
  1. KAS login → Domain → DNS settings.
  2. Add record → CNAME: Host www, Target web.jimdo.com..
  3. Under Domain → Edit domain, set a 301 redirect from yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.
Host Europe
  1. KIS login → Domain Services → Domain → DNS.
  2. New entry → CNAME: Name www, Target web.jimdo.com. → save.
  3. Create a 301 redirect for the root domain under Web hosting/Redirects.

3) Checks & troubleshooting

  • Propagation/cache: Wait up to 24 hours and clear your browser cache before testing again.
  • 301 redirect: If your domain only works with www and not without it (i.e., yourdomain.com), set up a 301 redirect from yourdomain.com → www.yourdomain.com.
  • SSL errors: Check that the CNAME correctly points to web.jimdo.com. For your domain without www, your domain provider issues the SSL certificate. If you forward your domain to the www version, it’s sufficient to have HTTPS (SSL) active there.
  • Conflicting records? Remove conflicting A/AAAA records for www.
